The Social Work Department and students celebrated International Social Work Day on March 21, 2023, under the theme of “Respecting Diversity Through Joint Social Action”.

International Social Work Day is a celebration of the social work profession and a way to promote the vital work of social workers where they have direct engagement in communities, refugee camps, orphanages, hospitals, and schools, as well as advocating for the rights of individuals and communities; justice and corrections; helping parents of children with developmental disabilities; supporting older adults focusing on their physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of daily living; and supporting the efforts of national governments, intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations, to name a few, to enhance social well-being.

This year International Social Work Day was celebrated by visiting the Ethiopian Red Cross Society and providing donations contributed by students, the department’s faculty, and the interim president of the institution. Consequently, students and faculty members have visited Kidane Miheret Children’s Home at Kebena, where students have contributed books to give to the children.

During the event, the Social Work Department Head, Ato Yonas Gebremariyam, and the Interim President, Br. Hans Moran has commended the students’ initiative to do good work as part of their learning journey. Students have also organized a get-together and games during the celebration of International Social Work Day.
